Applications and admissions in German University

The Academic German Semester is a new programme for international students planning to study for a university degree in Germany. To be admitted to a German university, certain language skills are required by law. With the Academic German Semester students with prior knowledge of the German langugage (intermediate level) can aquire these skills within only six months. 20 international students can join the programme during the academic semester 2016.

To be admitted to the programme you need to send us a letter of motivation either in German or English, describing your reasons and your plans for studying in Germany, and why you chose the University of Passau in particular. You will also be required to provide your German language proficiencies (B1) and that you are eligible for admission to a German university.

The application procedure of the Academic German Semester consists of three stages:

Stage 1

The closing date for applications is 15 December 2015.
You need to send us your application in writing. Applicants must provide an e-mail address to allow us to get in touch with you quickly.
Your application should include the following documents:
Letter of motivation in German or English
Curriculum vitae in German or English
Langugage proficiency B1
A certified copy of your secondary school certificate (advanced level)/high school diploma or equivalent (e.g. Baccalauréat, Lise diplomasi, Apolirito, Título de Bachillerato + Pruebas de Aptitud), as well as certified copies of transcripts of any university courses you might have undertaken until now. If the original language of these documents is not English or German, you will also need to have them translated into German and certified by a sworn translator. Applicants from China are additionally required to send us the original APS certificate which they received from the Akademische Prüfstelle – Academic Evaluation Centre at the German Embassy in Beijing.

We regret that we are unable to process late or incomplete applications.


Once your application has been received, the University will shortlist candidates. If your application has not been approved, we will notify you by e-mail within four weeks of receiving your documents. Once the application deadline has passed, we will send out the notice of approval.

Stage 2


Together with the notice of approval sent by e-mail you will receive a registration sheet which we ask that you complete and return to us. You should also instruct your bank to transfer an advance payment on the course fee of € 490,00 to the university’s bank account. Please note that we cannot reserve a place on the course for you until we receive the registration sheet and advance payment. The available places will be allocated on a “first come – first served” basis. We recommend that you make payment as early as possible, as places on the programme are strictly limited. We reserve the right to retain your payment of € 490,00 to cover our costs if you decide to cancel your reservation after 1 February 2016. If you are unable to participate in the programme for reasons beyond your control (e.g. if you are denied a visa by the German immigration authorities), we will refund your payment less the bank charges for the bank transfer.


We will stop taking applications and registrations as soon as all places on the programme have been allocated. Otherwise the closing date for applications and regisrations is 7 January 2016. Your payment and the completed registration sheet must reach us on or before that date. If your initial application has been approved but you have not yet registered, you will be notified by e-mail about the closing of the programme once all places have been reserved. Any payments received after 7 January 2016 or after we have notified you that applications have been closed will be refunded less the bank charges incurred.

Stage 3


Once the university has received your payment and registration sheet, we will send you an official confirmation of your admission to the language programme Academic German Semester which is important for your visa application.


The remaining course fee (€ 1.000,00) has to be paid before the course starts.


International students coming to Germany must abide by certain additional laws and regulations – for more information, please turn to the web pages of the International Office.




All other information pertaining to your stay in Passau, the programme and the support we provide during the courses will be sent to you at the end of the admission process.
