Are you ready for the academic, professional, and cultural experience of a lifetime? As an international applicant to the Washington Semester® Program, you can spend a semester or an academic year in the dynamic, cosmopolitan city of Washington, D.C., where you will have access to some of the most influential people and organizations in the world. Upon completion of your program, you will receive an American University transcript with 12 credits which may fit into your degree program at home.

Through an intense, experiential seminar, you will have the opportunity to gain invaluable work experience through an internship at a local organization and meet the movers and shakers of Washington, D.C. An advanced-undergraduate program, the Washington Semester® Program attracts not only undergraduate students, but also early graduates, graduate students, and young professionals. Studying and living with students from across the United States and around the world, you will build lifelong friendships in a dynamic university community!

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Please note that students from partner institutions may be required to apply through their home university.

Applicants must be at least in the second semester of their second year of college at the time of participation.


Washington Semester® Program applicants from overseas universities must submit the following application documents:
Washington Semester® Application
Official University Transcripts
Letter of Recommendation or Nomination from a member school

Proof of English Fluency: As proof of English fluency, we accept the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or Pearson's Test of English (PTE). Minimum scores* for admission to the Washington Semester Program are:
Paper Based TOEFL: 550
Internet Based TOEFL: 80 (Minimum of 18 on Speaking & Listening)
IELTS: 6.5
PTE: 59

Applicants who do not quite meet the minimum scores may gain conditional admittance to the Washington Semester® Program, based on first completing a semester on the International Gateway Program.
